What to expect from medium sudoku

Medium puzzles are rated 1.5 to 2.4 on the Sudoku Explainer scale. On top of singles they ask for candidate techniques: naked and hidden pairs, pointing pairs and claiming. It is the level where pencil marks start to pay off.

Fewer clues and moments where no single is visible. To move on you write candidates and use simple patterns such as naked pairs or pointing pairs.

How long does a medium sudoku take?

Typically 15 to 30 minutes. Players who use pencil marks consistently are usually faster.

Do I need pencil marks for medium sudoku?

It helps a lot. The pair techniques this level needs are much easier to spot when every cell shows its candidates. Switch the board to Note mode to add them.
